Freemantle and Perth

Perth and Fremantle
Saturday Feb. 16

We were docked at 8:00 a.m. and departed the ship at 9:00 on a tour that showcased the sights and highlights of Fremantle and Perth. We drove through historic Fremantle, past the Maritime Center of the west. We viewed the Fremantle Prison and the Round House (the oldest remaining building in Western Australia). We drove along the Esplanade to take in the interesting and historic colonial architecture of Fremantle, the suburb of Perth. When we went into Perth itself we drove by luxurious riverside homes known as Millionaires Row. We had free time at Kings Park. (See pictures). We stopped at Cottesloe Beach scenic point that looked out to the Indian Ocean before returning to Fremantle.

Today was the annual 18 K swimming race. The swimmers swam from the mainland to the island of Rottnest. The only way to get to the island is by ferry and no cars are allowed on the island.

We got off the bus in Fremantle rather than taking the bus to the ship. We walked around the busy town and did some shopping. It was a very warm afternoon so we had to stop in a pub for a cold beer. We found comfortable seats with a cool breeze on the balcony and watched a street entertainer.

The next three days are sea days and we will continue to follow the Australian coast on various Northwesterly courses. Our next port will be Bali,Indonesia.

Basketball update: KU lost at Texas 72 - 69, a texas player shot was 4-4 from behind the line to keep Texas in the game in the 1st half. Then KU got out rebounded in the 2nd half to give Texas to many second chance points. KU beat Colorade at home 69-45. KU is now 9-2 in conference with a week off before road trips to OK. State and Iowa state.

Bryan has a inflamed tendon in his right hip and will see limited action in the Class A sectionals on Monday. He was going to be running in the 55m 300m and 4X200 m relay. He probably will only compete in the 55m. He has been going in early at 6:00am and lifting, then having practice after school. That was just to much of a workout on his hip. State Qualifiers are in two weeks if he is recovered by then.

I see you are on a couple of sea days now on your way to Bali.

Brent gave you a good update on KU...K-State,KU, and Texas are tied for first in the big 12 as of now. They all have 2 losses in big 12. K-State lost to Texas Tech there last Wednesday night, but won at home against Missouri 100 to 60 something last night. We have Nebraska, Texas, Colorado, and Iowa State and KU at KU left. Doubt if we can stay tied...We are rated 22 by AP and 18 by Coaches nationaly and KU is #3. Samson is in trouble at Indiana...steming from recruiting at Oklahoma.

I see you are going to Manila in the Philipines. We have had missionaries, the Barkers, in Mindanao for 50 years, they were students at K-State and went to Grace Baptist..they created their own mission and started many schools there, also have a farming business which one of their sons runs and a construction business which another son runs. They also have many teachers who teach the Bible in the public Philipine schools. They have a home in Topeka and we see them ever so often. Another missionary couple who have a home in Topeka and work in prison ministries..were 50 years in New Guinea..was called Irian Jayua(sp) then. they also orginated from our church and went on their mission when there were mostly cannibals there and wore no clothes. They are retired now and are going back there sometime this year because a woman in Topeka is going to write a book about their mission and she wants to go with them to know what it is like there now.

I guess, I have bored you enough ..

Talk to you later

The K-State girls are playing Missouri away on TV in a few minutes. They are # 1 in big 12.
